Jim Theisen Awarded the Kiesau Award

Jim Theisen Awarded the Kiesau Award

At the Mid States Rendezvous Awards Banquet, Sunday August 20th, Jim Theisen was awarded the distinguished Kiesau Award, given to those who have made a significant impact in the Mid States’ group. Jim, surrounded by his family, proudly accepted the award, humbled to be recognized for his impacted. Attached are some pictures from the awards.

For the Award’s background, I’ve inserted a summary below and a link explaining how Bob and Jean Kiesau started Mid States.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JIM!! We are proud to be a part of your success.

Our Founders – Bob and Jean Kiesau

In the early 1950s, Bob and Jean Kiesau were driving through Illinois on their way from a Florida vacation when they noticed a billboard that advertised discounts on automotive parts for “fleet” operators. It struck the Kiesaus that farmers probably all own five or more vehicles, so they would qualify for the “fleet” discounts. All they needed was a “fleet” card to verify that they were “fleet” operators. Bob and Jean took the risk and decided to open new stores built around this concept. Farmers flocked to his stores with their cards in hand. The idea was the beginning of modern discount merchandising.

Soon others heard of the idea and eventually people like the Mills brothers, Harold Bomgaars and Claude Blain began traveling to Grand Forks to learn more about this new “fleet store” concept. The Kiesaus gladly shared information regarding their operation and, without realizing it, began a tradition of sharing “best practices” that is still carried on today. In 1953, they formed a consortium to pool their buying power – “Mid-States Buying Group” was born. Their product lines soon expanded from automotive to farm supplies and even household goods based on their customers’ needs.

The full list of 2016 grant recipients is available online at www.dbqfoundation.org/theisens.

Now in its eighth year, the Theisen’s More for Your Community grant program has given away $1,452,613 to support local nonprofit organizations and the people they serve.

“With this year’s grants of $303,000, we are simply giving back to our community and the people we serve,” said President Jim Theisen. “We are so proud to support these nonprofit organizations as they provide food, shelter, healthcare, safety and education to children and families in and near to our store communities.”

The donors who support this grant program, which include Jim and his sons Chris and Tony, take active roles in evaluating each year’s many applications. They also make annual site visits to nonprofit grantees to learn about community needs and to meet the nonprofit leaders serving our children and families.

Nonprofits will receive their grant checks at More for Your Community grants celebrations hosted by local stores throughout Iowa and Wisconsin on Monday, November 14.

The Theisen’s More for Your Community corporate giving program is a partnership with the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque (CFGD). CFGD President and CEO Nancy Van Milligen said, “The Foundation is proud to provide efficient and effective grantmaking support to these generous corporate leaders as they give back to their communities.”

Successful grant applications included evidence of project dollars directly reaching children, strong local matches, and opportunities for those served to give back to the community.

Theisen's Home*Farm*Auto awards nearly $50,000 in grants to Davenport area nonprofits

Davenport, Iowa— Theisen’s Home?Farm?Auto, a family-owned, leading Midwest retailer, will be opening its 23rd store in Davenport Iowa. To serve the community and as part of our commitment to the communities we serve, Theisen’s is awarding nearly $50,000 in Theisen’s More for Your Community Grants to 23 area nonprofits during the new store’s ribbon cutting. These grants are part of more than $300,000 that the company will distribute to nonprofits throughout Iowa and Wisconsin through the 2016 Theisen’s More for Your Community grant program.

Theisen’s Home?Farm?Auto has donated more than $1.2 million in More for Your Community grants since the program’s inception in 2009. Above and beyond this amount, the company directly supports many other community events and organizations throughout Iowa and Wisconsin. The grant program is supported by the Theisen’s charitable fund through a partnership with the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque. Support from the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend helped facilitate the process.

The More for Your Community program makes direct grants to agencies to jumpstart and/or sustain projects that most effectively and directly serve the basic needs of families and children, including food, shelter, education, safety and health. Applicants were required to be 501(c)(3) nonprofits, government-sponsored, or school-sponsored organizations and directly serving children and families within a 60-mile location of the Theisen’s Davenport location.

“Giving back to those in need was shown to me by my parents more than 60 years ago. We continue giving back today as a company (and personally) because supporting our store communities is the right thing to do. They support us and we support them.” said Jim Theisen, Co-Owner and Board Chair Emeritus.

The full list of 2016 Davenport grant recipients is available online at www.dbqfoundation.org/theisens. Theisen’s will announce the remaining grants for communities throughout Iowa and Wisconsin on November 14.

Vision to Learn expands to serve 45 schools in eastern Iowa during 2016-2017

Vision to Learn Expands to Serve 45 Schools in Eastern Iowa

The Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque and nonprofit Vision To Learn partner to provide up to 2,000 students with free eye exams and glasses.

The program is being supported by donations from Theisen’s Home*Farm*Auto, Vision To Learn, Klauer Optical Co., and the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque.

DUBUQUE, Iowa—Kids across Northeast Iowa will be seeing clearly after Vision To Learn announced the addition of 45 schools for the 2016-2017 school year. Last year, Vision To Learn and the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque (CFGD) partnered to pilot the vision program in eight Title I schools in Dubuque and Jackson Counties. Nearly 180 students received free eye exams and 90 students each received two free pairs of glasses.

“We are thrilled to be able to continue this partnership with Vision To Learn and expand this pilot program to all our affiliate counties. We are lucky to have local partners like Theisen’s and Klauer who are so passionate about helping young people in our community,” said Nancy Van Milligen, president and CEO of CFGD. “Through our work with the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, we know that there are still kids in our region who are not reading at grade level. Proper vision care is just one of the tools that can help them be successful in school.”

“Vision To Learn is proud to provide the critical educational tool of a pair of glasses to thousands of Iowa students,” said Austin Beutner, founder and chair of Vision To Learn.

Starting in October, the mobile clinic will begin traveling to area schools in Allamakee, Clayton, Clinton, Delaware, Dubuque, Jackson and Jones counties where it has the potential to serve more than 2,000 kids in need of vision care. The clinic will continue its journey throughout Eastern Iowa during the school year, and in the summer months it will make stops at summer programs and local organizations serving children. Students will be identified for an exam on the mobile clinic based on school screenings, and those requiring a prescription will each receive two free pairs of glasses—one to keep at school and one to take home.

The program is made possible through donations from Theisen’s Home*Farm*Auto, Klauer Optical Co., Vision To Learn and CFGD.

“Being a part of Vision To Learn provides kids the opportunity to see and therefore succeed. Theisen’s Home*Farm*Auto is proud to help sponsor this expanding program,” said Jim Theisen, president of Theisen’s Home*Farm*Auto.

The partnership with Klauer Optical Co., will allow the glasses given to students to be sourced locally. Students will receive their new glasses faster and repairs can be done more quickly, reducing the time that children must be without their much-needed glasses.

“Klauer has been working with the Dubuque Community School District for the past 10 years to help supply eyeglasses for children who need them, but can’t afford them or access them. The difference we have seen this make in the student’s school performance and overall well-being has been tremendously positive,” said Jeff Klauer. “I was very pleased to participate in the Vision To Learn pilot program last year, and look forward to taking an active role in the upcoming year in helping children in our community who need eye care.”

As many as 20,000 students in Iowa lack the glasses they need to see the board, read a book and participate in class. Due to lack of health insurance, difficulty accessing eye care providers and other obstacles, many students who are identified in state-mandated school vision screenings do not receive the follow-up care or glasses they need.

Vision To Learn recently hired local optician Patricia Wilkinson to travel with the mobile clinic. Wilkinson, who is from Kieler, Wisconsin, served Northeast Iowa for a number of years during her career and was even able to work with the schools previously through a position with Klauer Optical Co. Vision To Learn is currently seeking an optometrist to provide exams to students on the mobile clinic. This will be a fulfilling opportunity to help set up students for success in Northeast Iowa. The position features generous pay, a signing bonus and an end-of-year bonus. Interested applicants should contact Amanda@visiontolearn.org.

Since 2012, the nonprofit Vision To Learn has given children access to vision care through Vision To Learn mobile clinics that travels to school sites. Students receive a vision exam from an optometrist and, if glasses are prescribed, can choose their frames from a wide selection of colors and sizes.

CFGD brings Vision To Learn to Iowa through its Dubuque Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, which works to help more children read at grade level by the end of third grade. Research by the University of California Los Angeles Mattel Children’s Hospital shows that Vision To Learn has a direct impact on education outcomes for children supported by the program and improves the learning environment for the entire classroom and school.

Vision To Learn began operations in Los Angeles in 2012 and now serves children in schools throughout California, Delaware, Iowa and Hawaii. As a not-for-profit organization, Vision To Learn serves the needs of the hardest-to-reach kids in low-income communities. More than 89% of kids served by Vision To Learn live in poverty and 87% are kids of color. Since its inception, Vision To Learn has helped more than 45,000 kids.
