Batteries and tires are as essential today as they were in 1927. It is with these two items that our Theisen’s Home • Farm • Auto story begins.
Theisen’s Battery & Electric, founded by Leo and Kathryn Theisen, was located on 8th Street in Dubuque, Iowa. Inside this small two-story brick building there were only 2 items for sale: batteries and tires. As needs changed, our selection expanded. By providing these essential items, the business was able to survive The Great Depression and World War II.
In 1956 Leo and Kathryn’s son, Jim, joined the business. He was crucial in setting the foundation for the company’s growth by adding 7 more stores. Jim later assumed the role of President in 1979. His philosophy is, “People buy from People, not from Companies”. To this day, Jim Theisen is quick to remind associates and customers alike about this firm belief. Our commitment to exceptional customer service is something we strive for with every interaction.
We recognize that without customers and communities, our longevity would not be possible. We believe that as we grow, the people and the communities around us should benefit as well.
For this reason, we regularly give to organizations that contribute to your well-being. Over the years, Theisen’s has supported over 500 non-profit organizations like FFA, 4-H, Toys for Tots, The Boys & Girls Club, United Way, county fairs, educational programs, local parishes, and many more. In 2012, the More for You Grant Program was established to help serve the basic needs of the communities that we call home. To date, this program has donated over $2.4M!
In 1987 the family business welcomed Jim’s sons, Chris and Tony, extending the lineage to a third generation. With the help of their father, they were able to triple the companies size from 8 stores in Iowa alone to 24 stores across Iowa and Wisconsin with nearly 1,200 associates.
A fourth generation was established in 2014, with the addition of Matt Theisen, followed closely by Kaylee Theisen in 2015 and Peter Theisen in 2017.
In 2020, Chris Theisen was named the fourth CEO and President in company history. Tony Theisen was promoted to COO/Vice President and Board Chairman.
As our family business approaches its 100-year anniversary, you can be assured that we have not strayed from our values that have made us successful throughout our history. Today we are proud to not only offer you tires and batteries, but also thousands of other products for your home, farm, and automotive needs.
