Look very similar to bluegill in body form, but have less banding on the sides and slightly lighter in color. Have a distinctive orangish, red gill flap for which it gets its name. Redear primarily feed on snails and are often referred to as “shellcrackers”. These fish help diversify your prey base by expanding your panfish production since they don’t compete with other panfish for food. They also grow larger than bluegill and some hybrid bluegill offering a more “trophy” panfish.

Though, the redears real importance to your pond comes from its diet of snails. Snails are in intermediate host for a wide range of parasites and diseases to your fish, with the most common being the yellow-grub parasite that can often be found in the flesh of game fish. By removing the snails from your pond the redear helps break the life-cycle of these parasites resulting in a healthier pond, and overall healthier fish populations.
