Harrison Fishery 3"-5" Hybrid Bluegill

Hybrid bluegill are a cross between a regular bluegill and a green sunfish. This hybrid is advantageous for pond owners who like to fish for large panfish. This cross has a larger mouth, which lets them feed on larger prey items, expanding their diet and allowing them to grow faster. They also have a thicker slime coat that helps protect them from disease and infection from handling when caught so there is less hooking mortality if caught and released. These are a great option to replace crappie with in impoundments that may be too small to sustain healthy crappie populations (see crappie description for more info). They are also ideal for young anglers as they are similar to bluegill in that they group up so are easily targeted, and are aggressive to strike both lures and live bait.

While they are superior to regular bluegill in growth rate and fishability, sadly they cannot replace bluegill in their role as bait fish. Hybrid bluegill are not sterile, but are roughly 95-98% male so there is very little reproduction within the species. They will often end up spawning back with regular bluegill females and begin to look more and more like regular bluegill, so occasionally need to be restocked.

  • Never use water with chlorine or chloramine
  • Livestock watering tanks, plastic or metal garbage cans, or other large containers could be used
  • Use a lid or cover
  • Get fish in your pond as soon as possible
  • Temper your fish in the container by slowly adding water from the pond before releasing fish if more than a 10 degree difference
