Harrison Fishery Fathead Minnows

Probably the most common minnow found throughout the Midwest. They are so common because of their tolerance for a wide range of water quality conditions. Its food consists mainly of algae and other plant material, but will also eat aquatic insects and zooplankton (microscopic crustaceans that are common in all standing water). These characteristics make it a great prey base for your pond since they grow on naturally occurring feed in your pond that is produced from energy entering your pond in the form of sunlight.

Another characteristic that makes them a very suitable baitfish is that they reproduce often. Females can spawn roughly every 28 days when water temperatures are above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Fathead minnows spawn often because they never grow large enough that they are safe from predation so they need to make sure they produce offspring early and often. That is also why it is important to have structure in the pond for them to hide from predators, as they can be hunted out in some ponds by predator fish. This structure is also important for their reproduction as they deposit their eggs on submerged objects.
